I love BBQ sauce. I like it sweet.  I like it thick.  I like it smoky.

The only problem is that BBQ Sauce, like ketchup, gets its sweet kick from sugar — and a lot of it. This healthier homemade version does not contain sugar itself, but is sweetened with some natural sweet, dark and sticky molasses. The rest of the ingredients are probably already in your store-cupboard and it couldn’t be easier to make.

You can enjoy this as a dip or even use it to baste your meat before grilling or barbecue-ing for a sweet and smoky glaze.

Steps

1
Done

Heat a sauce pan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute or two.

2
Done

Reduce the heat to low and mix in the tinned tomatoes and apple cider vinegar. Add the tomato puree, spices and all remaining ingredients. Stir until combined.

3
Done

Simmer for 5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly. Adjust any seasonings and sweetness to taste.

4
Done

Transfer the sauce to a blender and blend until smooth. Store in an airtight jar or container and keep in the fridge. Note: it will keep in the fridge for approx. 1-2 weeks.
