Choc Chip Oat & Nut Protein Bars
Protein bars are the ultimate convenience in healthy snacking on-the-go, but you don’t have to spend all your hard-earned cash on expensive protein bars in fancy packaging. Protein bars are simple to make at home, and the chances are you probably already have most of the ingredients in your cupboards.
By making your own bars, you know exactly what you’re eating. Many commercial protein bars are filled with “polyols” (sugar alcohols) in place of sugars (actually, the term “sugar alcohol” can be quite misleading as they are neither a sugar nor an alcohol). You ever found that protein bars just don’t sit well with you? Chances are that it ain’t the protein.
Polyols like maltitol, lactitol, erythritol, sorbitol etc. are a common ingredient in bars because they add sweetness, but have fewer calories than sugar. The problem is just that some people (not all) have trouble digesting these, so they can cause bloating and stomach discomfort.
Making your own bars, you choose the sweetener, what flavour combinations you want, and what extras you want to add in. I like to add chopped nuts for some crunchy bites and healthy fats, and some dark chocolate chips for a bit of indulgence. You can also add things like dried fruits for more sweetness.
